At Rotterdam Sand Air Flight School we guide you professionally and personally towards obtaining your LAPL (Light Aircraft Pilot License) or PPL (Private Pilot License). Our courses meet the European EASA guidelines and are conducted from Rotterdam The Hague Airport, with modern teaching equipment and experienced instructors.
✈️ LAPL – Light Aircraft Pilot Licence
The LAPL is ideal for recreational flying within Europe. The license provides an accessible route to independent flying with light single-engine aircraft.
Characteristics:
- Fewer theory and flight hours than PPL
- Suitable for private and recreational use
- Flying within Europe (EASA area).
- Expandable with additional powers
✈️ PPL – Private Pilot License
The PPL is the most well-known private pilot’s license and offers maximum freedom for non-commercial flying.
Characteristics:
- Internationally recognized
- More theoretical depth
- Greater expandability (night flying, IFR, type ratings)
- Ideal as a basis for possible vocational training
Admission requirements (LAPL & PPL).
To start the course you must meet:
- Minimum age: 16 years old (17 years old for certification)
- Medical examination: EASA Medical Class 2 or LAPL
- Language skills: adequate command of Dutch and English
- Motivation & commitment: theory and practice run partly parallel
Theory course – subject overview
During the training you will take a full theory course. Theory can be taken online or in self-study (with guidance).

The theory exams are administered under the supervision of the Environmental and Transport Inspectorate (ILT).
Practical training (flying lessons)
The practical training consists of:
- Dual classes with instructor
- Solo flights
- Navigation flights
- Exam preparation and practical examination
Indicative flight hours:
- LAPL: approximately 30-35 hours
- PPL: minimum 45 hours (EASA requirement).
